Prof. Gilbert De Landsheere was born in Belgium in 1921. He was selected as the recipient of the 1988 José Vasconcelos World Award of Education in recognition to his 40 year fight to upgrade teacher education for all levels of instruction. His continuous effort to develop European empirical education research in order to influence the whole art of teaching is also quite notable.

The Official Awarding Ceremony took place on November 19, 1988 in México City with the collaboration of the National Polytechnic Institute.
