Dra. Hernández, a pioneer in science and mathematics education in the Philippines, was granted the 1985 José Vasconcelos World Award of Education for her more then 20 years dedication to the improvement of education in her country. As founder and Director of the University of the Philippines Institute por Science and Mathematics Education Development she has played a significant role in the development of instructional materials and in the re-training of teachers for this purpose.

The Official Awarding Ceremony took place on November 21, 1985 with the collaboration of the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden.
