In 1988 the Palace of Fine Arts in Mexico City and the National
Polytechnic Institute acted as host to the World Cultural Council,
Prof. Margaret Burbidge, was selected as the recipient of the “Albert Einstein” World Award in recognition to her fundamental contributions to several areas of astrophysics, namely: the stellar composition of stars, spectroscopy of normal galaxies, properties, rotations, and masses of stars and the physical properties, energy sources and radiation mechanisms of quasars. Prof. Burbidge is widely acknowledged for her work on the theory of quasars.

The “José Vasconcelos” World Award of Education was delivered to Prof. Gilbert De
Landsheere
in recognition to his 40 year fight to upgrade teacher education for all levels
of instruction. His continuous effort to develop European empirical education research in
order to influence the whole art of teaching is also quite notable.
