University of LiégeSpecial Recognitions 2009 - Science

Steven Laureys
Université de Liège University of Liége

Steven Laureys is a Master of Research for the National Fund for Scientific Research (FNRS) and a Doctor of Medicine, Master of Sciences in Pharmaceutical Medicine, a neurologist, Doctor in Medical Sciences, a Master of Sciences in palliative care, and holds a higher education teaching qualification. Today he directs the Coma Science Group at the ULg’s Cyclotron Research Centre.

It was Steven who discovered that Rom Houben, in an apparent coma for 23 years, was actually fully conscious and helped release him from his inability to communicate with the outside world, a case which is now breaking news and making science rethink its assessment of coma states.

The winner of numerous scientific prizes and a prolific author, Laureys is assuredly one of the world’s foremost specialists in altered states of consciousness.
