Special Recognitions 2006

Every year the World Cultural Council grants special acknowledgments in the host country to people who have achieved outstanding performance in the fields of science, education and art. This year we are pleased to acknowledge the following people:

Dr. Gerardo Silverio Contreras Puente
Professor of the Higher School of Physics and Mathematics of the Instituto Politécnico Nacional.

For his contributions to the physics and chemistry of semiconductors and solar cells.

His efforts have turned into a search for the best possible material for technological innovation in this area.

Dr. Rene Drucker Colin
Professor and Researcher in Biomedical Sciences at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México.

For his contributions to the Neurochemistry of Sleep.

He has carried out lucid studies of Brain Biochemistry so as to better understand states of wakefulness, sleep disorders and changes in patients with Parkinson’s Disease and to seek alternatives to overcome this and other neurological afflictions.

Al Dr. Adolfo Guzmán Arenas
Researcher from the Computer Research Center (CIC) of the Instituto Politécnico Nacional.

For his distinguished contributions to computer science, particularly in the field of Expert Systems. His varied work has led him to design at least five, high-quality software systems, along with the creation of high-level languages for image processing, all of which contribute to the development of Artificial Intelligence.

Al Dr. Octavio Paredes López
Professor of the Biotechnology Department of the Centre of Research and Advanced Studies (CINVESTAV) of the Instituto Politécnico Nacional in Irapuato, Guanajuato, Mexico.

For his major contributions to the genetics and biotechnology of food plants.

His work has centered on both the improvement of foodstuffs with their different alimentary properties along with their neutraceutic uses.

His is a great instructor in the field of biotechnology and has given talks in Latin America, the USA, Canada, Holland, Spain, France, Australia and Senegal.
