The University of Oxford hosted the 1996 Award Ceremony. Prof. Alec Jeffreys who was the discoverer of DNA fingerprinting received the "Albert Einstein" World Award of Science. This award was delivered to him in recognition of his valuable and pioneering contributions to Biological Sciences specifically in the field of Genetics.

The World Cultural Council granted the "José Vasconcelos" World Award of Education to Prof. Roger Gaudry for his more than 55 years of work and his outstanding contribution to Higher Education, with a significant influence in the advancement of University life. He established academic models which transformed the authority structure of the University and allowed democratic modes of operation.
